Both with a 3-1 record, the St. Joseph’s Hawks are ready to take on the Kentucky Wildcats on Monday, November 20th.
Although Saint Joseph’s (3-1) remains a formidable opponent for Kentucky, the Hawks just suffered a 57-54 loss to Texas A&M-Commerce, a team that is currently in the process of moving up from Division II into Division I, in their season opener. For the initial time this year, the Hawks’ shooting fell completely cold; they only hit 18 of 66 shots from the floor and 6 of 30 from beyond the arc. Erik Reynolds II, who leads the team in scoring with 14.3 points per match, was only able to score 11 points on 3-of-12 shots. A trio of wins in a row to begin the season saw Saint Joseph’s defeat Lafayette by 21 and Stonehill by 44. But the most noteworthy of the lot was a 69-61 triumph over Penn at home during Philadelphia Big 5 pool competition.
No. 17 Kentucky shot the lights out of the basketball versus Stonehill to avenge their season’s first setback. The next match for Kentucky is an at-home contest versus a motivated Saint Joseph’s on Monday evening in Lexington, Ky., before the team takes a couple days off for Thanksgiving. The Wildcats (3-1) defeated Stonehill 101-67 on Friday evening, shooting 17-for-32 from beyond the 3-point arc. During the John Calipari era, they set a new record for the most 3-pointers scored in one contest. As usual, it was Calipari’s rookies who took the initiative and took center stage. With 25 points, Reed Sheppard took the lead and scored 7 of 8 long-range shots. Rob Dillingham scored three 3-pointers and contributed 20 points. Sheppard and Dillingham each contributed 7 assists, while D.J. Wagner, a fellow rookie, scored 9 points from 3 three-point range.
