On Wednesday, November 8th, the Thomas & Mack Center will host a college basketball game between the Southern Jaguars and the UNLV Rebels.
The previous campaign, the UNLV Rebels finished 7-11 in the Mountain West Conference as well as 19-13 overall. Along with 4 other players who saw action, UNLV dropped the team’s top 3 scorers from the previous campaign. Jackie Johnson III, the 3rd-leading shooter from the previous season, and Justin Webster are both back. Returning Shane Nowell, who scored 4.8 points per match on average the previous campaign. Numerous players, including 3 freshmen and 5 transfers, were added by UNLV during the summer. Isaiah Cottrell, a forward from West Virginia, Jalen Hill, a guard from Oklahoma, Robert Whaley, a forward from Junior College, and center Kalib Boone from Oklahoma State are some of the players who have transferred. Despite having had a below-average campaign, UNLV could get off to a strong start in this match. The Rebels are going to require a lot of men to stand up here because they lost both of their top scorers from the previous season.
After losing the opening contest to TCU 108-75, the Southern Jaguars remain without a win this campaign. TCU tallied 75 points, but Southern let them score 54 points during both halves and fell by over 30 points. In the defeat, the Jaguars shot 44.6% from the floor, 41.7% from three-point range, and 53.8% from free throw range. Southern produced 14 assists, turned the ball more than 16 times, and was outrebounded 45–33 overall. With 20 points and 3 rebounds, Brandon Davis paced the Jaguars. JaRonn Wilkens chipped in with 10 points and 3 rebounds as well. South Carolina gave up 108 points from 61.4% field goal percentage. Just 33 rebounds were collected by Southern, with 13 coming from the offensive and 20 from the defensive boards.
