Game Preview

Illinois vs UConn Game Preview

The TD Garden will host the NCAA basketball Elite Eight match between UConn and the Illinois Fighting Illini on Saturday. In the Final Four, the victor of this matchup will face the eventual winner of Alabama vs. Clemson. Follow this article for more basketball analysis.

UConn Analysis: Has been dominating so far

One of the three 1-seeds still in the tournament is the 34-3 UCONN Huskies, the defending national champions with the most victories in the NCAA thus far. The Huskies have dominated their opponents, defeating them by an average score of 28.6 points. Their victories include a rematch of the previous year’s championship game versus San Diego State, as well as wins against Stetson and Northwestern. It was a full team effort against SDSU, as four players scored in double figures despite their main threat within the paint, Donovan Clingan, being cold for a large portion of the contest. With 18 points, guard Cam Spencer led all scorers, and with 16 points and 11 rebounds, rookie guard Stephon Castle recorded his first career double-double.

Illinois Analysis:First time in Elite 8 in 9 years

Illinois, who started the season outside of the Top-25 and was tipped as a one-and-done contender for the postseason, is 29-8 on the year and has surpassed all preseason projections. Rather, Illinois advanced to the Elite 8 after overcoming Duquesne, Morehead State, and the formidable Iowa State Cyclones by an average of 15 points. By far their most difficult game was the one they won against the Cyclones, 72-69, as the Illini held on in the end. Terrance Shannon Jr., the top player for Illinois, carried the club on his back once more, leading all scorers with 29 points in just 29 minutes despite shooting 10-19 from the field due to foul trouble.
