On February 3, the No. 8 Kentucky Wildcats (15-5) will take on the No. 5 Tennessee Volunteers (15-5) in a game between SEC rivals at Rupp Arena.
Taking everything into account, Tennessee (15-5) is having a terrific season and may even be in better form than in previous years. Although they had difficulties early in the season versus top opponents, the Volunteers have improved recently. Significant victories over Illinois, Wisconsin, and Alabama bolstered their record, but the Volunteers are coming off an incredible upset at home versus South Carolina. Dalton Knecht, a transfer from Northern Colorado who averages 20.1 points and 4.6 rebounds, is a key addition to Tennessee’s offense in the offseason. Knecht has emerged as the team’s leading scorer. Zakai Zeigler, a point guard (9.8 ppg, 5.0 apg), is still a vital player and in good condition. Junior forward Jonas Aidoo (11.6 ppg, 7.4 rpg) has contributed plenty, and even though Santiago Vescovi’s numbers don’t particularly stand out, he has been playing very well.
Entering the game with a good 5-3 SEC record, Kentucky (15-5) will also need to put up a strong comeback effort. The Wildcats have once again gathered an impressive group of young talent, but John Calipari’s team has seen ups and downs this season. They have now lost 3 of their last 6 matches, including a home overtime setback to Florida in their last game. Antonio Reeves, a former Illinois State standout (19.5 ppg, 4.4 rpg), is still a key member of the Kentucky basketball team. This week’s setback to the Gators saw rookie guard Reed Sheppard (12.1 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 4.2 apg) score 24 points, demonstrating how much he is blossoming. Rob Dillingham, a formidable backcourt weapon (14.2 ppg, 3.8 apg), is another talented rookie to keep an eye on.
