Game Preview
After winning 9 consecutive games at home, the North Carolina Tar Heels (17-4) will play the Duke Blue Devils (16-4) on February 3 at Dean E. Smith Center.
Expectations were high going into this Duke (16-4) season, especially with so much young and returning talent in Durham. Although Jon Scheyer’s team has underperformed at times this season, it has also had a few impressive victories and has been playing brilliant basketball lately, defeating 2 of the top ACC squads in the last week alone. The Blue Devils’ standout player to watch is sophomore center Kyle Filipowski (17.5 ppg, 8.7 rpg), who is back for an unexpected 2nd season and projects to be an All-American. With 16 points earlier this week against Virginia Tech, Jeremy Roach (13.9 ppg, 3.1 apg) leads a youthful backcourt. Mark Mitchell (12.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg) is another important member of this frontcourt, while freshman Jared McCain (12.4 ppg, 4.3 rpg) is a different 5-star prospect who has been playing well lately.
Conversely, the North Carolina team (17-4) has been the most impressive club in the Atlantic Coast Conference thus far this year. Prior to capturing their first 9 ACC games, the Tar Heels had several noteworthy performances in non conference play. Georgia Tech’s one-point win in their last game versus UNC still hurts, but they’re ready to turn things around. Senior guard RJ Davis (21.5 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 3.3 apg) has emerged as one of the Tar Heels’ most valuable players this season. Davis scored 28 points versus the Yellow Jackets earlier this week. Even in a losing season, Armando Bacot (13.4 ppg, 9.9 rpg) is still one of the top rebounders in the country, therefore we can’t undervalue his contribution. Harrison Ingram (12.1 ppg, 8.8 rpg), a transfer from Stanford, was a significant summer addition.
