Game Preview
At the Fertitta Center in Houston, Texas, on February 3, the 4th-ranked Houston Cougars (17-2) will take on the Kansas State Wildcats (14-5).
All things considered, Houston (19-2) is playing as good as it is humanly possible in their first Big 12 season. Although the Cougars have been a great program in prior years, conference and roster changes this season presented fresh difficulties. After starting the season 14-0, Houston has won 5 consecutive Big 12 games, including recent road trips to Texas and BYU. LJ Cryer (15.1 ppg, 2.6 rpg), a Baylor transfer who is still a Big 12 standout with the Cougars, has been a major component of that equation. Jamal Shead (12.3 ppg, 5.8 apg), who just finished with a 25-point performance in their last game’s overtime victory over the Longhorns, joins him in this great backcourt. J’Wan Roberts (8.7 ppg, 7.1 rpg) anchors the frontcourt, and sophomore guard Emanuel Sharp (12.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg) is also developing into a playmaker.
On the other side of the floor, Kansas (17-4) is still a very strong program despite having a unique standing in the new Big 12. The Jayhawks are 3-3 in league play and have suffered 3 road losses, including strange trips to West Virginia and UCF. Though they have a roster full of potential, the Jayhawks have really just begun to explore their options. They have some difficult games ahead of them. Hunter Dickinson (18.7 ppg, 11.2 rpg), a former Michigan All-American who has assumed a significant role as Kansas’ center, was the big name from the offseason. Kevin McCullar Jr. (19.8 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 4.7 apg), a former Texas Tech guard who has established a significant role for the Jayhawks over the last three seasons, may be equally significant.
