Early in the season, Tennessee experienced one 3-game losing streak (against Purdue, Kansas, and North Carolina). The Volunteers didn’t lose back-to-back games after that until early March, against Kentucky and Mississippi State. Tennessee has won its first 3 games in the National Tournament, defeating Creighton, Texas, and Saint Peter’s. The Volunteers were down 1 point, 35-34, at the half of their Sweet 16 game against Creighton on Friday. From then on, Tennessee stepped up and scored a 48–40 run to win 82–75 in the end. The team’s leading scorer, Dalton Knecht, finished with 24 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Purdue Analysis: Zach Edey is leading this team
On the Purdue side, they haven’t dropped a game in a row and have been remarkably consistent this season. The Boilermakers defeated Michigan State in the conference tournament, but they lost to Wisconsin 76-75 in overtime. Since then, the team has prevailed in the NCAA Tournament against Utah State, Gonzaga, and Grambling. When the Boilermakers faced Gonzaga on Friday, they had a 40-36 advantage in the changing room. The rest of the way, Purdue outscored the Bulldogs and easily defeated them 80–68. With a double-double of 27 points and 14 rebounds, Zach Edey led the team. He has distinguished himself at Purdue not only by his height but also by his play in the line of play. With a game average of 24.5 points and 12.1 rebounds, he is among the league’s most effective rebounders.
