Predictions & Preview: Central Arkansas vs Vanderbilt 11-17-2023

Game Preview

Game Preview

The Vanderbilt Commodores (2-1) host the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears (1-2) at Memorial Gymnasium on November 17th.

The Commodores defeated UNC Greensboro 74-70 on Tuesday, almost blowing an 18-point lead. For Vanderbilt, Ezra Manjon produced 24 points and made all 12 of his penalty shots; Colin Smith contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds. Vanderbilt’s offensive efficiency has been lacking; going into the game, their field goal percentage was 39%. With a 79% free throw shooting percentage thus far, they rank 48th in terms of made free throws. Without forward Ven-Allen Lubin, guard Tyrin Lawrence, and center Lee Dort—all of whom have missed play recently due to injuries—Vanderbilt has struggled. And their defense hopes to get back on track as Vanderbilt ranked 121st in college basketball last season after giving up 6.7 3-pointers per game and allowing 31.0 percent of their opponents to shoot from beyond the arc.

In its two matches against D1 opponents, Central Arkansas has lost, falling to Tulsa 70-53 and Arkansas-Pine Bluff 85-83. The Bears defeated D3 Hendrix College 82-39 in the interim. The Central Arkansas attack looked strong in their most recent contest, posting 83 points against UAPB. They made 17 of 21 free throws and had a total field goal percentage of 43.3%. Elias Cato led the Bears in scoring with 22 points, and Tucker Anderson chipped in with another 17. Important players are also absent for Central Arkansas. While limiting the opposition to just 64.7 points per game, the Bears defense has been outstanding; but, they gave up 85 points in their most recent defeat.
Guard Camren Hunter, who averaged 16.9 points and was selected to the third team All-Atlantic Sun last season, has not played for the Bears this season and Carl Daughtery Jr. missed the previous 2 games but when healthy he scored 19 points against Tulsa.
