Central Michigan vs Oklahoma State: Predictions & Picks 9/01/2022

Game Preview

Week 1 of the college football season is upon us and it brings non-conference action when the MAC travels to the Sooner State to face a program from the Big 12. The Central Michigan Chippewas are on the road as they make the trip to face the #12 Oklahoma State Cowboys Thursday night.

Central Michigan finished the 2021 season with a 9-4 record and capped the year with a 24-21 win over Washington State in the Sun Bowl. Oklahoma State finished the year 12-2 last season, reached the Big 12 title game and then knocked off Notre Dame 37-35 in the Fiesta Bowl. These teams have split two previous meetings with the Chippewas picking up a 30-27 win in the most recent meeting.

The Chippewas closed the year with seven wins in their final eight games and triumphed in each of their last five games. Jim McElwain’s group has plenty of offensive weapons back as they return seven starters from a season ago.

Replacing a pair of first-team All-MAC offensive linemen will be a challenge, as will replacing wide receivers Kalil Pimpleton and JaCorey Sullivan. Defensively, the Chippewas have a lot of work to do in order to make things happen as they have only three starters back from last season’s unit.

The Cowboys’ season ended with a win in the Fiesta Bowl, the same way that 2011 campaign ended. The Cowboys reached the Big 12 Championship Game before falling just short against Baylor.

Oklahoma State has to replace some key contributors from the offensive side of the ball, including their leading rusher and their #1 receiver from a season ago. The Cowboys also have to replace defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who took a job at Ohio State. Derek Mason, formerly the head coach at Vanderbilt, has to fill a pretty big pair of shoes.
