On December 28, SMU (11-2) and Boston College (6-6) will square off in the Fenway Bowl at Fenway Park in Boston.
After starting quarterback Preston Stone was hurt versus Navy, Kevin Jennings will make his 2nd start for SMU. In the AAC championship game, Jennings played fairly and guided the squad to victory. Against rivals that surrendered 31.3 points per game, the Mustangs produced 40.6 points per game on the season. Therefore, SMU’s offensive performance is decent but not quite as impressive as it first appears. With Stone starting at quarterback, the Mustangs passed for 285 yards per game in addition to running for 183.1 yards. Teams averaging 25.3 points were able to score 17.4 points against the Mustangs. SMU limited its opponents to 6.0 yards per pass attempt and 3.2 yards per carry. With just 4.4 yards allowed per play, the Mustangs are tied for seventh best in the country.
Boston College finished the season 6-6 after losing its final 3 matches after opening the year 6-3. For the Eagles, the Fenway Bowl is likely as good as it gets. The team decided to play in front of their local crowd since they had little chance of making it to a more prestigious bowl game. The offense of Boston College isn’t that bad. By conceding 24.4 points per game, the Eagles average 25 points against opposing teams. Boston College like rushing the ball; they average 191.5 yards per game on 42 rushes and they gain 6.7 yards per throw attempt and throw 28.6 times per game. Every game, the Eagles witness 36 running plays with 24 passes on average. There wasn’t much of a need to toss the ball because teams versus Boston College averaged 193.7 yards on the ground. However, teams average 8.2 yards per pass attempt when they did throw.
