On December 23 at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex in Honolulu, Coastal Carolina will take on the San Jose Spartans.
Chevan Cordeiro commanded the Spartans with 249 yards on 19 of 26 passes (73.1%) with two touchdowns and no picks when facing the Rebels. With 16 carries, Kairee Robinson gained 165 yards (10.3 yards per carry) and 2 touchdowns. Against the Rebels, Nick Nash caught three passes for 98 yards, averaging 32.7 yards per catch. As it heads into its 2nd straight bowl game, San Jose State had a 1-5 start to the season but has since won 6 straight games. The Spartans finished 6-2 in the regular season to share the Mountain West Conference championship with UNLV and Boise State. For the first time in program history, the Spartans (7-5) are bowling for the second time in a row and the third time in four seasons. They participated in the renowned Idaho Potato Bowl and finished 7-5 the previous season.
In the Chanticleers’ game against the Dukes, Ethan Vasko completed 21 of 29 passes for 254 yards, a single touchdown, and no interceptions. He gained 45 yards and 1 touchdown with 9 rushes. Ja’Vin Simpkins had a 22-yard performance with six carries (3.7 yards per attempt) in that contest. Sam Pinckney caught four passes totaling sixty-three yards (six targets). The quarterback position for Coastal isn’t entirely settled. Grayson McCall, who transferred to North Carolina State, was sidelined by a concussion. During his brilliant career at Coastal, he passed for 10,005 yards, 88 interceptions, 14 touchdown passes, and 18 runs into the end zone. Jarrett Guest, a senior reserve, also went into the portal, allowing redshirt freshman Ethan Vasko to take the field. The Chanticleers, who have a rookie quarterback with 94 collegiate passes under his belt, will play 6 time zones away from home.
