On December 27, the Tulane Green Wave (11-2) and the Virginia Tech Hokies (6-6) will play in the Military Bowl at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Throughout the last month, Virginia Tech had a bit of a streak, going from wins to defeats. Still, the Hokies performed well enough to be eligible for bowl games, defeating Virginia 55-17 in their final regular-season game to improve to 6-6. The majority of the roster was kept under 2nd-year head coach Brent Pry, therefore the Hokies should remain largely intact for the 2023 Military Bowl. Additionally, they have no notable college football injuries. The most important loss for the Hokies is probably that of tight end Daequan Wright, who ranks third among receivers. Kyron Drones, the starting quarterback for the Hokies, has passed for 1,993 yards, 15 touchdowns, and just 3 interceptions in his first season. In addition, Drones ran for 4 touchdowns and 642 yards. RB Bhayshul Tuten should be watched because he ran for 8 touchdowns and 727 yards.
In addition to losing head coach Willie Fritz to Houston, Tulane also lost wide receiver Chris Brazzell, TE Alex Bauman, and edge rushers Devean Deal and Keith Cooper Jr. to the NCAA transfer portal. Qb Michael Pratt, who chose to skip the 2023 Military Bowl in order to get ready for the NFL Draft, will also be absent for the Green Wave. Pratt will instead take part in the Senior Bowl. Pratt completed his passing career with 2,406 yards, 22 touchdowns, and just five interceptions. Since backup Kai Horton is also listed to be a transfer, Justin Ibieta, a third-string player, is most likely to start for the Green Wave. Ibieta has only made 39 pass attempts in his 4 seasons at Tulane, so Tulane will look to do as best as they can.
