On September 2, 2023, the SMU Mustangs (7-6 in 2022) will take on the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (3-9 last year) at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Going into this game, the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs are the heavy underdogs.
Let’s call it what it was: a year of rebuilding. The former Red Raider bomber quarterback and great offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie acquired his own post after filling in admirably for the sacked Matt Wells late in the 2021 Texas Tech season.
Being a head coach was a new position for him. Since the offensive struggled in 2020 and was all over the place in 2021, he had to do more than just stick to what he knew best and modify and realign the system. It never found its rhythm last season, the proper quarterback never materialized, and the defense didn’t help out one bit. Rebuilding
But don’t think that things will start happening automatically just yet. The goal last year was to get things moving, and this year it’s to give the fans reason to believe. Now that the plan is taking shape, the team is more dynamic than ever, making a strong run at a winning season and a bowl appearance.
SMU, meanwhile, looks to be on the cusp of something major. The transfer portal is helping immensely in SMU’s second year under head coach Rhett Lashlee, and there is persistent speculation that the Pac-12 may promote SMU to the Power Five show. This is by no means a definite conclusion, but there is enough smoke to suppose there might be a fire.
The team is dangerous, there is optimism for big things to come, and it’ll be a surprise if the school doesn’t come up with its fifth straight winning season. The conference schedule is more than doable; the non-conference slate, not so much; more on that at the end. If that were to happen, it would be the first time the program had such a sustained period of success since the 1986 season brought an abrupt end to the program.
