The Brewers swept the Padres in their previous series. They are rapidly losing postseason contention after dropping seven of their previous ten games. The Padres’ current record of 61-70 places them 20th in the National League West. To make matters worse, they trail the Diamondbacks for the final Wild Card place by eight games. In addition to being deadlocked with the Nationals at eight games back, the Giants, Reds, and Marlins also stand in their way.
Over the weekend, the Padres’ pitching staff let them down. They lost all three games in which they allowed at least 22 runs. The Padres’ pitching staff has been quite good this year. Team ERA ranks seventh, while WHIP ranks 14th and opponent batting average ranks sixth. Today they’ll pitch 10-9 Blake Snell, who has a 2.73 ERA, best in the majors. This month, he has not been performing up to his usual standards.
The Cardinals, however, are also coming off a sweep heading into today’s game. They were swept by the Phillies. The Cardinals’ struggles with consistency and injuries all season long have contributed to their 56-75 record. They are now 13 games out of a playoff berth in the National League and have the second-worst record in the league (behind only the Colorado Rockies).
Both the Cardinals and the Padres have had pitching issues recently. In their last three games, they’ve allowed a total of 22 runs. In terms of team ERA, WHIP, and opponent batting average, the Cardinals currently rank 24th, 28th, and 29th, respectively, in the Major Leagues.
Today, Adam Wainwright will take the mound for the team. He has a record of 3-9 and an earned run average of 8.61. He’s been terrible this past week.
