A match between these two squads occurred in April. In that series, the Orioles won two of three. However, since then, there have been major shifts on both teams. The White Sox are now among the league’s weakest clubs.
They now are in last place in the AL Central and have the fourth-worst record in the majors. Chicago lost most of their pitching depth in a trade, but kept their core of reliable hitters together. For the next 31 games, they will rely on those players.
Michael Kopech needs to get out to a strong start if they want to win. The White Sox have been unable to muster much of an offensive effort against Rodriguez’s solid pitching. In April, Kopech started for the White Sox against the Orioles and pitched effectively enough to get the win.
But that Orioles club was a little bit different. Since then, Baltimore has promoted some youngsters, and they’ve done quite well. However, Kopech should be able to prevent any base runners for Baltimore. This season, opponents are hitting just.224 against him, but his walk rate is through the roof.
The Orioles are competing for the American League’s number one seed. They are in first place in the AL East, but they only have a two-game lead. The AL East champion appears to be the clear favorite to earn the best overall seed.
They’ll be well rested for the ALDS if they take the top seed. Seven of Baltimore’s last 10 games have been victories, and the team has won three consecutive series. The Orioles swept the weekend series in Colorado. The rest of their schedule is fairly challenging, so this is a must-win series for them.
Grayson Rodriguez has improved greatly since his recall on July 17. He has a 3.24 ERA with 32 hits allowed in 41.2 innings pitched (7 starts), 2 home runs allowed (both unearned), and 35 strikeouts. He’s maturing into the type of pitcher the Orioles envisioned, and he might be a huge asset in the postseason.
