An undefeated squad led by a well-known coach and with the country’s third-best rushing offense has managed to go under the radar in Los Angeles. Even though UCLA hasn’t played a nationally-known Power Five school yet, victories against Coastal Carolina and San Diego State are more impressive than wins over multiple opponents from the same conference.
The defense, though, is the driving force. Yes, this program is physical enough and strong enough to hold its own against the Utah lines and not get shoved all over the place; the Bruins are vicious at getting into the backfield and allow just two rushing yards per carry.
Because it hasn’t played anyone all that amazing, UCLA’s style has worked so far, and it’s breaking in a wonderful true freshman quarterback in Dante Moore. North Carolina Central was unable to do much last week, Coastal Carolina didn’t have enough left in the tank to pull through late, and San Diego State’s offense is inconsistent.
UCLA is a strong, physical team, but Utah is far better at what they do. UCLA has an incredible running game, with 811 total yards and almost 400 of those coming in the previous week versus NC Central. However, the Bruins are not in control of the clock. The Chip Kelly squad is a fast one. That’s fantastic when the opponent team doesn’t have any offensive firepower, but it becomes a problem when Utah keeps the ball for nearly 35 minutes every game.
Utah, though, is not letting their opponents get the ball. In the victory versus Baylor, there was only one interception. In its three games, UCLA has turned the ball over six times and generated eight takeaways. Utah will be at home and facing a reloading squad that will struggle to generate any momentum on a few plodding drives. If we were talking about playing in Pasadena, things may be different.
