At this point in the 2023 season, Michigan State has dispatched Central Michigan and Richmond with ease. This coming Saturday, No. 8 Washington will visit East Lansing, marking the beginning of the meat of the Spartans’ schedule.
In the coming weeks, the Spartans could witness a large influx of transfers. It’s possible that the off-field events have demoralized the student-athletes to the point where they aren’t giving their all on the field. The Washington Huskies will be visiting Michigan State. Currently ranked in the top 10, they have a great shot at making it to the CFP this year. How well will the Spartans do against the Huskies’ potent offense?
In 2023, Michigan State will be the underdog for the first time in Week 3. In Week 1 against Central Michigan, the Spartans were a 14-point closing favorite, and in Week 2 against Richmond, they were a 29.5-point favorite. So far this season, MSU is 2-0 against the spread.
Washington and Michigan State meet on Saturday, September 3 in one of the biggest early season non-conference games in college football. This time next year, though, the contest will be a routine Big Ten conference showdown.
Michigan State will be led by interim coach Harlon Bennett, with some help from former coach Mark Dantonio, who will return in an advisory role, as much as on the field without head coach Mel Tucker, who the school suspended pending further investigation into a sexual harassment allegation.
At the same time, the Spartans will have to figure out how to slow down Washington quarterback Michael Penix, who has thrown for 859 yards in two games, scored eight touchdowns against one interception while completing 73% of his passes for a 566-yard-per-game offense.
Michael Penix Jr. has already set five single-game throwing yardage records at UW, including two this season, in just 15 games as a Husky. With 39 touchdown passes throughout his career, Penix is now sixth all-time at Washington. He has passed for multiple touchdowns in 12 of his 15 games for the Huskies. In the first two games of the season, Penix has led the FBS in overall offense, passing yards per game, passing touchdown passes, and passing completions per game.
