On December 23, the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl takes place at Albertsons Stadium between the Georgia State Panthers and the Utah State Aggies.
This season, Georgia State won 6 of its initial 7 matches. With that 6-1 record, the Panthers were looking at a conference title and a season that could change the course of the program. However, Georgia State lost its final 5 matches of the season, going winless in Sun Belt games. A heartbreaking loss to Old Dominion in the final seconds of the regular season was the culmination of a disappointing campaign. Georgia State possessed the ball and was ahead by 7 with 1:17 remaining in the game. However, a poor snap called for a safety, which gave Old Dominion the opportunity to drive the field and score a walk-off touchdown and end the game 25-24. Georgia State’s defense, which allows 431.9 yards per game, the 16th worst in the FBS, has left them needing to rely on their 76th-ranked offense (372.8 yards per game) to stay in games.
The Utah State Aggies ended their regular season with a 6-6 record and became bowl eligible for the eleventh time in the previous 13 seasons after overcoming New Mexico 44-41 in double overtime in their last game (only missing bowl opportunities in 2016 and 2020). USU has a 5-5 record in bowl games since 2011. Blake Anderson’s 2023 team will have an opportunity to win both the season and the bowl games during this 13-year span. Quarterback Levi Williams finished their last game with 198 yards and two scores on 16 of 27 passes (he did throw 1 interception, late in the first half on a deep pass). Considering the bravery and injuries suffered by Hillstead and Legas, Williams might play a significant role in Utah State’s anticipated bowl trip in December.
