Baylor‘s shocking home loss to Texas State in Week 1 of college football, by a score of 42-31, was one of the biggest surprises of the season so far. Blake Shapen, the team’s starting quarterback, has been sidelined for two to three weeks with an MCL injury, along with head coach Dave Aranda.
Sawyer Robertson, a transfer from Mississippi State, will try to rescue Baylor’s season following a disappointing Week 1 loss in Blake Shapen’s absence. In his rookie season with the Bulldogs, Robertson completed 6 of 11 passes for 23 yards and an interception. In Week 1, he was only able to complete 6 of 12 passes for 113 yards and 1 interception. In addition, he had a 31-yard rush.
Even with a backup quarterback, the No. 14 Utah Utes had no trouble in Week 1. Bryson Barnes and Nate Johnson led the team to a 24-11 victory over Florida at home despite the fact that Cam Rising wasn’t ready to play yet due to a knee injury he sustained in the Rose Bowl.
Nate Johnson got reps at quarterback and was electrifying as a runner despite Bryson Barnes taking over as the starting quarterback when Cam Rising was injured in Week 1. Johnson completed three of four passes, but they gained only six yards.
In the running game, he completed six carries for 45 yards and scored on a 27-yard sprint. Johnson, a dual-threat option who seems to provide a nice change of pace for Utah, will continue to get plays even if Rising is healthy enough to play.
The Bears’ defense looked terrible against Texas State last week, allowing 42 points, although Utah might not score as many as the Bobcats. Baylor still managed to outgain Texas State by a score of 524-441 and average 6.9 yards per play despite the setback. Sawyer Robertson is a clear downgrade, but Utah is also starting their backup quarterback.
Florida really ought to have been able to keep up with Utah a lot better. Florida passed for 346 yards while Utah ran for 270, but the Gators managed only 13 yards on the ground. Utah’s poor third-down performance resulted in six punts.
