Predictions & Picks: Lions vs Chiefs 9/7/2023

Game Preview

Game Preview

The 2023 NFL season kicks out with an interconference game in the Midwest. On Thursday night, the Detroit Lions will travel to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs. Detroit finished the 2022 season 9-8, which was their first winning record since 2017 and their sixth consecutive season outside the playoffs.

In Dan Campbell’s second year as manager, Detroit made significant strides forward, going from 3-13-1 in 2021 to 9-8 in 2022. The Lions lost their first six games of the season, but finished with eight wins in their final ten to eliminate the Packers from playoff contention.

With the departures of Jamaal Williams, D’Andre Swift, and Justin Jackson at running back, the Motor City will see significant transitions this year. The Lions replaced them with Jahmyr Gibbs, a first-round pick, and David Montgomery, a free agent signee from the Bears. Teddy Bridgewater, a capable backup quarterback, was signed.

For the seventh year in a row, the Chiefs won the AFC West with a 14-3 record, and they also won Super Bowl LVII, defeating the Eagles, 38-35. The Chiefs lead the all-time regular season series between these teams, 9-5, and they won their most recent meeting, a road game, 34-30, on September 29, 2019.

After losing to the Eagles in Super Bowl LII in February, Kansas City returned to the big game for the third time in four years and won for the second time in that span. The Chiefs went 14-3 during the regular season, then won the AFC championship by beating the Cincinnati Bengals and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Chiefs’ defensive line has struggled thus far this season. Free agent signing away from San Francisco Charles Omenihu received a six-game suspension for personal conduct policy violations.

While the Lions’ second half of last season was impressive, winning at a hostile venue like Arrowhead on the road will be difficult. The Lions have several gaps that they’re hoping to fill with this move, but their secondary still has many unanswered issues.

The Chiefs may not have Tyreek Hill and company running wild like they did in years past, but they still have Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce on offense.
