In an NFL matchup between division foes, two top-10 draft picks will face off. Both the Carolina Panthers and the Atlanta Falcons finished with a 7-10 record and a 9-8 record against the spread in 2017. Who do you think will have the better opening stretch?
Bryce Young was the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft because of his many accomplishments, including a national title and the Heisman Trophy. High hopes are warranted because the Panthers traded a lot to get the pick, including standout wide receiver D.J. Moore.
Carolina let coach Matt Rhule go after an awful 1-4 start. They then promptly dealt star running back Christian McCaffrey to the 49ers. The Panthers’ performance under interim coach Steve Wilks was satisfactory, as they went 4-2 in their final six games. New head coach Frank Reich has arrived with the goal of creating a winning environment. Young will act as the movement’s spokesperson on the field.
The Falcons selected Texas Longhorns running back Bijan Robinson with the eighth overall choice in the most recent draft. An identical selection (wide receiver Drake London and quarterback Desmond Ridder in the third round) was made a year ago.
When it came to rushing yards per game, the Falcons were second in the league a year ago. The team’s run game should be even more dangerous after the addition of a generational talent and the return of Tyler Allgeier, the team’s leading rusher from the previous season.
Concerns have been raised about the airstrike. How far can Ridder go this year? The Falcons will likely try to establish the run, but will Ridder be able to keep the opposition’s defense off the field? Ejiro Evero, the Panthers’ new defensive coordinator, formerly worked for the Denver Broncos, who regularly used blitzes.
Both the Falcons and Panthers had identical records last season, both winning twice at home while losing once on the road. But there are other patterns in recent history that point to the Panthers’ favor. The Falcons have dropped their first game of the season five years in a row.
