College football action kicks off for the season on Thursday night at Pratt & Whitney Stadium, as the NC State Wolfpack take on the UConn Huskies. Who will get off to the best possible start? Only one way remains to discover the truth.
UConn has yet to demonstrate that it can effectively ramp up its passing game. Even though the offensive line is solid and the running game will provide some big plays here and there, don’t expect the passing game to rack up 300 yards. This NC State defense will not allow it to happen.
The Wolfpack will need productivity from their new linebacker components, but the massive line should help out against the run, and the secondary is outstanding. Under new coach Robert Anae, the offense should come out swinging and the corners will shut down the UConn receivers.
UConn’s defensive backs are veterans, but they’ll have trouble keeping up with new quarterback Brennan Armstrong. The Pack O’s passing game will succeed where UConn’s has failed.
UConn’s defensive line is solid enough to stop an improved NC State rushing attack. To be effective against an offensive line that will improve with time but uses this game as a tune-up, the pass rush must be there early and often. Last season, the Pack’s rushing offense only averaged 3.4 yards per carry, and that might not change anytime soon.
Their offense relies on time management. Late in the 2017 season, it rediscovered its rhythm, and now it has the line to do more than just keep up with NC State’s defensive line. Around future NFL starter Christian Haynes, four starters return, giving them plenty of bang for their buck.
How perilous may this situation be for NC State? Despite last year’s impressive 21-20 road victory over East Carolina, this year’s squad may take some time to get rolling after a slow start.
