College football’s regular Thursday night games are back to start the season, and Week 1 features a marquee matchup between Nebraska and Minnesota, the Cornhuskers and their West Division rivals the Gophers.
If Matt Rhule takes over for the Huskers, how much better will they be right away? As a whole, the attack will be more efficient and flexible, but the changes to the ground game should be the most noticeable. Even though quarterback Jeff Sims, a transfer from Georgia Tech, is a dangerous all-around talent and the receiving corps has improved, the team as a whole will only see significant, rapid growth if the defense improves.
The secondary will be solid right away, but the front six will require immediate production from the new transfers. Keep the run assault under 200 yards like the Huskers accomplished last year and this game will be tight despite Minnesota’s pounding.
Losing Mohamed Ibrahim, who rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns in last year’s 20-13 Gopher victory, and John Michael Schmitz, the great center for the team before he signed with the New York Giants, will be tough for Minnesota.
There is a lot that needs to be done in Nebraska, and it won’t be solved right away. Minnesota’s offensive and defensive lines are better and more consistent to start the season, while Nebraska’s defensive line needs immediate help and the offensive line will likely take a few weeks to reach full strength.
Chris Autman-Bell is well again after missing time with a leg injury, RB transfer from Western Michigan The defense that was ninth in the country in total defense and fourth in scoring defense will be even better if the pass rush can do a bit more, and Sean Tyler should be a statistical standout for the offense.
