The stakes of the game are high for both squads. Houston isn’t expected to do much this season after being picked to finish 12th in the Big 12 preseason poll, but the Cougars still have some pride to defend against an opponent from their previous conference.
As the preseason No. 2 pick in the AAC, UTSA is widely regarded as one of the conference’s top teams. The Roadrunners will benefit from playing tough opponents outside of their league. Tennessee and Texas State are the other two matchups.
With a victory, UTSA would not only gain significant momentum, but it would also solidify its position as one of the AAC’s top teams. A victory would boost the Cougars’ morale during what has been viewed as a transitional season.
Harris, who is in his seventh year of collegiate football, is the starting quarterback for UTSA. He is a dangerous dual-threat quarterback who could get some early Heisman buzz with a strong debut performance. Harris, who just won his conference’s player of the year award, threw for 4,063 yards and 32 touchdowns while also rushing for 602 yards and nine scores.
Harris joins defensive tackle Joe Evans and wide receivers Joshua Cephus and De’Corian Clark on the Senior Bowl Watch List. There were six touchdowns and 985 yards in receptions for Cephus. Clark caught 51 passes for 741 yards and eight touchdowns despite missing five games due to injury.
Donovan Smith, a junior, will take over at quarterback for the Cougars after spending the previous three years at Texas Tech. Smith, who is 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighs 241 pounds, had a completion percentage of 66.0 last season and threw for 1,505 yards, 12 touchdowns, and eight picks. He had seven touchdowns while rushing for 116 yards.
Stacy Sneed, a redshirt sophomore, had the highest rushing total among returning players with 488 yards (6.9 average) and five scores. With 38 receptions for 584 yards and seven scores as a sophomore, Matthew Golden is the top returning receiver. The defense gave up 32 points per game last year, ranking 111th in all of FBS. Cornerback is one of their strengths, especially with senior Alex Hogan in charge.
