The Boise State Broncos play the Washington Huskies in the first week of college football action. Can Michael Penix Jr., the Huskies’ quarterback, continue where he left off? This Saturday afternoon, Seattle, Washington will host a matchup between the Mountain West and the Pac-12. The Broncos finished last season 8-2, including a win in the Frisco Bowl over North Texas, while the nationally rated No. 10 Huskies are garnering a lot of attention heading into Week 1.
Washington will be able to build on its strong foundation thanks to the return of Michael Penix Jr., who had a breakout year statistically in his first season with the Huskies in 2022. Boise State scored 30 or more points in eight games last season, and Taylen Green is back for the Broncos’ West Coast offense scheme led by returning head coach Andy Avalos.
Can the Huskies win their home opener and prove they belong in the top ten? Or, will the Broncos pull off a road upset with the help of their powerful defense and physical style of offense?
Washington’s RB1 Cameron Davis, who last year led the Huskies with a 4.9 YPC average and 13 rushing touchdowns, is among the many players who won’t be returning. You can count on a lot of passes to Rome Odunze and Jalen McMillan from Penix Jr., who has a strong arm.
Since no incoming transfers are expected to contribute immediately, the continuity from last season will be high for Boise State. The contrasting styles of play between Taylen Green’s dual-threat abilities and the pocket throwing brilliance of Penix Jr. could make for an entertaining game this Saturday.
In their last meeting, in 2019, the Huskies dominated the Broncos at home, winning 38-7. But that was four years ago, so almost all of those employees have left. Since 2012, every other meeting has been won by either the Broncos or the Huskies, with each team going a perfect 4-0 in those four games.
