A team can have your number at times. When playing the Atlanta Braves, the Colorado Rockies are well aware of this. Colorado has lost all six meetings this year, eight in a row, and 12 of the last 13 between the two teams. On Wednesday night, the final game of a three-game series between the Rockies and Atlanta will be played at Coors Field.
Kyle Freeland (5-13, 5.00 ERA) will start for Colorado, while Darius Vines (major league debut) will take the mound for the Braves. Despite having a dismal season, Freeland has been willing to take the reins when called upon. He’ll be making his 26th start of the season on Wednesday night, and he might be the only pitcher who started the year in the rotation who is still with the team.
It’s probable that Austin Gomber will miss his next start after he left Monday’s game with back discomfort. Freeland is 1-3 with a 5.80 ERA in seven career starts against the Atlanta Braves. On June 15, at home, he allowed seven runs to the Braves, who at the time had the best record in MLB.
The Rockies’ recent losses to the Braves have become routine. Despite winning the previous two games of the series by a combined 17-5, Atlanta’s offense struggled in Tuesday’s 3-1 victory, producing only three runs on fifteen hits.
After getting blown out on Monday, Colorado gave the Braves a good game on Tuesday. In nine starts across three levels of the minors after being activated at the end of June due to shoulder soreness, Vines went 2-2 with a 2.70 ERA.
On Monday, he was called up to add depth to the bullpen, but manager Brian Snitker decided to start him at Coors Field, where hitters have an advantage. The 25-year-old also has some big shoes to fill.
The veteran Charlie Morton had a terrific night on Tuesday, winning for the 14th time this season. Only four other pitchers, all of them 39 or older, have gone at least six innings at Coors Field in Denver and allowed no more than one run on three hits.
