Game Preview

On Tuesday, the Rays beat the Marlins 11-2. They plan to try to win the season series with a clean sweep now. The Marlins got off to a good start, taking a 1-0 lead on a Jazz Chisholm single to center field.

Later, Chisholm continued to have trouble as he hit a solo home ball to deep right field, giving the Marlins a 2-1 lead. But in the sixth inning, everything went apart as Isaac Paredes hit a single that tied the game. Next, Jose Siri doubled to drive in two to make it 4-2. In the seventh, the Marlins’ chances of winning evaporated.

It was 5-1 before Harold Ramirez drove in a run. Then, Randy Arozarena made it 7-2 with a bomb to left center. At the 8-2 mark, Josh Lowe hit a monstrous home run to right center. In the ninth inning, Paredes completed the scoring with a three-run homer, increasing the score to 11-2.

The Rays’ Aaron Civale allowed two earned runs on seven hits in five innings of work. In contrast, Sandy Alcantara allowed four earned runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings.

The Rays will go with Zach Eflin, who has a 13-8 record and a 3.55 ERA. He pitched six innings against the New York Yankees recently, surrendering two earned runs on seven hits and striking out 11.

For the Marlins, Jesus Luzardo will take the mound. He has a 9-8 record and a 3.77 ERA. In his most recent start, he shut out the San Diego Padres over the course of six innings while punching out seven.

The Rays have an 81-52 record heading into today’s game, which places them 2.5 games behind the first-place Baltimore Orioles in the American League East. They are also clinging to the AL’s first wild card position.

With a 66-66 record, the Marlins are in third place in the National League East. Their final deficit in the NL wild card race is three games, against the San Francisco Giants.
