On Saturday for the commencement of the 2023 season, the ODU Monarchs are scheduled to visit Lane Stadium for a highly anticipated primetime encounter. Both teams will be aiming to have a good start after a disappointing 2022 season.
Despite losing a lot of talent through the transfer window, the Monarchs were able to stock up on enough healthy players to field a respectable lineup, which should give them some confidence heading into this game. A Virginia Tech offensive that didn’t produce much of anything last season will be a soft target for Jason Henderson and the linebacking corps.
Not only did they fail to establish a ground game, but they also averaged just 19 points a game and had only nine takeaways on defense. To win, Old Dominion must maintain possession, limit scoring opportunities, and control the tempo.
Although the Hokies struggled in many areas last year, they did not struggle with turnovers, and their defense was not terrible on third downs. At least, such issues weren’t present after the first few minutes.
The Old Dominion isn’t going to do anything to stop time. Its average time with possession of the ball per game, just over 25 minutes, demonstrates that it likes to move rapidly through the passing game.
Offensively, Virginia Tech will improve. The line should be much stronger after receiving some talented wide receivers in the transfer portal, and there is experience and some choices at quarterback. The Hokies need to take advantage of Old Dominion‘s weak secondary immediately if they want to have a chance.
In last year’s season opener, Old Dominion defeated the Hokies 20-17 on a one-yard touchdown run by the team’s former running back. The Hokies turned the ball over five times and committed multiple penalties. This time around, the team dynamic will be drastically different.
