UCLA needs to win against Coastal Carolina if they wish to match their perfect start from last year’s 6-0 season. Chip Kelly, hired in 2018, is in charge of the Bruins’ team. Kelly has won three Pac-12 titles as Oregon’s head coach, and he has also coached in the NFL.
Kelly has done an outstanding job as Bruins’ head coach in recent years, leading the team to 9-4 and 8-2 records in 2022 and 2021, respectively. If you look at the win totals from the past two seasons, UCLA is getting better every year.
Since 1998, the Bruins have gone without a conference title, so they’ll do anything to get to the Pac-12 title game in 2023. The Bruins and the Chanticleers met in week one of the season.
After a perfect 6-0 start to the 2017 season, Coastal Carolina’s season ended with a loss to Troy in the Sun Belt Conference Championship Game. The season ended with a loss to East Carolina in the Birmingham Bowl, but the Chanticleers still finished with a respectable 9-4 record.
In five of their first six games last season, the Bruins’ offense scored 40 or more points. The Bruins scored 32 points on offense despite only one game during that stretch in which they failed to score 40 or more points.
In their non-conference schedule, UCLA was unbeaten, with wins over Bowling Green, South Alabama, and Alabama State. The Bruins lost a high-scoring road game to then-No. 10-ranked Oregon after starting the season with a perfect 6-0 record.
McCall is an extremely dangerous quarterback because he can win games with either his arm or his legs. Last year, he threw for 2,700 yards and 24 touchdowns, and he sprinted for 300 yards and three scores while only throwing two interceptions.
It will be difficult for the Bruins to get pressure on McCall and compel him to make mistakes because he rarely does so in games. The Chanticleers’ running game, powered by CJ Beasley, must be stopped as well.
