In the first week of the 2023 season, the Oregon State Beavers will play the San Jose Spartans at CEFCU Stadium. This is the first of three straight games for OSU that are not against conference opponents. This is only the Beavers’ second ever visit to San Jose State. Oregon State is looking for its first season-opening road victory since 1999.
The series is even at 4-4, however Oregon State holds a 5-1 advantage because San Jose State was forced to forfeit a 24-14 victory in 1979. In their most recent meeting in 2015, played at Corvallis, Oregon State University prevailed over the Spartans 35-21. This matchup is the second leg of a home-and-home series agreed to by the schools in 2012.
There are a lot of ex-Beavers on the coaching staff at San Jose State, including the head coach. After six years leading the receivers program in Corvallis, Brent Brennan left OSU for San Jose State in 2016. Derrick Odum, Kevin McGiven, Josh Oglesby, Joe Seumalo, and Lyle Moevao are the five additional San Jose State players/coaches/analysts with ties to Oregon State.
The Beavers’ defense will be taxed this year due to significant turnover, but the team’s prospects remain bright. DJ Uiagalelei transfers to Oregon State from Clemson to lead the offense. If he can limit his turnovers, the Beavers will have one of the best quarterbacks in school history. In 2023, he’ll have the help of a talented offensive line, a star running back in Damien Martinez, and enthusiastic fans.
After Boise State, Air Force, Fresno State, and San Diego State, San Jose State was voted fifth in the conference’s preseason poll, and was the only team on the list to not get at least one first-place vote. Nonetheless, the Beavers’ opponent from two years ago, quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, was named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year.
