In the first game of the college football season, two teams with legitimate chances of making the College Football Playoff—No. 5 LSU and No. 8 Florida State—will square off in a rematch in Orlando on Sunday.
Although slowing the ground game isn’t the same as stopping the run, it is effective against Florida State.
In last year’s thrilling 24-23 loss to Florida State, LSU was just getting started while FSU already had a game under its belt, yet LSU still had the finest day anyone had against one of the nation’s best rushing offenses. LSU was the only team that allowed less than four yards per carry, and only Wake Forest allowed less yards than the Tigers in a victory. The strength of the defense has just increased.
The linebacking group is outstanding, and the pass rush is looking good too. The converse is also true; LSU has been successful when its running game has been strong otherwise.
When LSU gained 140 yards or more on the ground, they went 10-1, whereas when they didn’t, they went 0-3. Who are they, Florida State? Last year, it gave up 139 yards in a victory, but this year it has already given up 140 yards six times and has been shredded by Florida and Oklahoma in its final two games.
You can’t just look at Florida State’s running game and judge them. At quarterback, Jordan Travis can do it all, and he has a deep and talented group of pass catchers at his disposal. Johnny Wilson, at 6-7, is a matchup nightmare of a deep threat, Keon Coleman, who transferred from Michigan State, will be an incredibly productive volume receiver, and Jaheim Bell, who transferred from South Carolina as a TE, will see regular Sunday action.
LSU’s secondary is solid, but the Tigers need some new faces to contribute right away at cornerback. Again, the Seminoles would like and need to run well, but they are one of the few teams capable of challenging this group and doing better than average.
