Two very exciting teams to watch will face off on a Monday night, with No. 9 Clemson hosting Duke in an early ACC conference clash from Wallace Wade Stadium. Despite winning the ACC title last year with a victory over North Carolina, Clemson finished the year with an 11-3 record and no appearance in the College Football Playoff due to a 31-14 loss to Tennessee in the Orange Bowl.
Head coach Dabo Swinney hired former TCU offensive coordinator Garrett Riley this offseason to address concerns about the offense. This move was hailed by analysts as a home run for the unit, which returns five-star quarterback Cade Klubnik and tailbacks Will Shipley and Phil Mafah. However, questions remain about how the team will produce a game-changing wide receiver and how it will replace some major departures on defense.
Clemson has now gone 12 seasons in a row with at least 10 victories thanks to the Tigers’ 11 victories last year. Starting quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei gave way to promising rookie Cade Klubnik as the season progressed. While Uiagalelei is now enrolled at Oregon State, the future lies with Klubnik. If the team wants to contend for the national championship again, Klubnik must continue to improve.
In the offseason before last, the Blue Devils made the decision to replace longtime head coach David Cutcliffe with Mike Elko. Duke, led by QB Riley Leonard, surprised everyone in Elko’s first season by winning 8 games in the regular season and their bowl. The Blue Devils’ season opening is against a top-10 club, and the rest of the schedule is just as challenging.
Clemson has won the last 5 games in a row and leads the series 37-16-1. Clemson defeated Florida State 35-6 at home in their most recent meeting on November 17, 2018. “Death Valley” is where these teams play their games. On November 3, 2012, Clemson defeated Durham 56-20, and on November 3, 2007, Clemson defeated Durham 47-10.
