On Saturday, Pitt and West Virginia will resume the “Backyard Brawl,” a classic college football rivalry. The Panthers vs. Mountaineers is an ongoing series that has seen 106 previous contests since its inception in 1895.
Can the Mountaineers finally stop giving the ball away so often? Last year, West Virginia lost because quarterback J.T. Daniels threw a late pick-six that changed the momentum of the game. Garret Greene will be calling the offensive plays this time, so he better be spotless. If the Mountaineers can limit their turnovers and establish the run, they should have a good chance of winning at home.
Whether or not Garret Greene improves as a passer in 2023 will determine the trajectory of West Virginia’s offense. So far through two games, he has a 57.8 passer rating while passing for 402 yards, four scores, and zero picks. He has also shown that he is still a dangerous dual-threat by adding 104 running yards and one touchdown on 20 carries.
Like Greene, Phil Jurkovec has gotten off to a slow start to the 2023 season in terms of accuracy (49.1%), but unlike Greene, he has yet to throw an interception. Jurkovec always managed to find a way to drive Boston College to success, and it looks like he’ll have to do the same for Pitt this year. It’s easier said than done, especially on the road, in this rivalry.
Is Jurkovec’s Pitt team capable of winning in Morgantown? He was only 10 for 32 last week, but fortunately three of those were touchdowns. It wasn’t enough, though, as Cincinnati came through in the end and won. After suffering a painful setback at Acrisure Stadium a week ago, Jurkovec will now have to face a hostile road environment. Can he pick himself up and start over?
