The Navy Midshipmen are four-point favorites over the South Florida Bulls in their upcoming American Athletic Conference clash. South Florida’s 2-2 record puts them in second place in the AAC, while Navy’s 1-3 record puts them in last. Neither club is off to a great start this year.
Although South Florida limited No. 10 Alabama to 17 points and scored 42 points against Rice, neither team has been particularly remarkable thus far this season. Both contests took place at Raymond James Stadium, the home field of the Bulls. Navy’s lone occasion covering the spread was a close game on the road against conference leader Memphis.
While the Bulls have demonstrated they can score points, it’s important to keep in mind that they’ve done so against very poor defenses in both the FBS and FCS. Byrum Brown, South Florida’s quarterback, has been responsible for 11 total touchdowns (6 passing, 5 running) this season.
Only wide receiver Khafre Brown stands out from the crowd with his 42 yards per game. Outside of Byrum, the offensive was lackluster.
The Midshipmen have scored six touchdowns through three games. Except for two, everyone else advanced via the ground game. Both passing touchdowns were caught by players that rarely break even on yardage. Navy has carried the ball nearly three times as much as they have passed it, demonstrating a clear preference for the rushing game.
While neither defense has shown the kind of numbers that inspire confidence just yet, Midshipmen free safety Rayuan Lane III has already recorded two interceptions and six pass breakups. If Byrum hits for more than average depth, Lane III will feast.
The numbers suggest that the ridiculously high under is a safe option. But let’s take the weather into account. The weather forecast for Annapolis, Maryland predicts rain in the morning followed by clearing skies. Winds will be blowing at around 15 mph during the game, though.
