On Saturday, August 26, the San Jose State Spartans will travel to Los Angeles to take on the USC Trojans in the opening game of the college football regular season at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. San Jose State finished last year’s Mountain West Conference play with a 5-3 record, and a 7-5 overall record.
The Trojans’ success this year depends on how much of an upgrade there has been on defense from last year to this one, despite the fact that returning starting quarterback Caleb Williams is in prime position to become only the second player in college football history to win two of the sport’s most prestigious individual awards.
Chevan Cordeiro, the Trojans’ seasoned quarterback, can keep them on their heels with his mobility and all-around playmaking skills. Since the offense did not turn the ball over frequently last season, the defense should be able to avoid getting gouged thanks to a solid secondary.
Despite the addition of numerous new players, the defensive front of San Jose State University demonstrated exceptional proficiency in pressuring the opposing team’s quarterback, positioning it as one of the top-performing units nationwide. Consequently, the offensive line of the University of Southern California faces the imperative task of substantiating its ability to effectively counter the formidable defensive prowess of San Jose State.
The defense was effective at creating pressure last season, despite the many issues and worries that plagued it. The secondary, led by standout NFL prospect Calen Bullock and a transfer portal-loaded safety corps, should be among the best in the country. The linebacking corps has the potential to be excellent.
That, and USC still has quarterback Caleb Williams. The Trojans’ offense should pound the ball until they find their rhythm and get into the game and the season. Williams shouldn’t have to face a barrage of tense third-and-long situations, and a fifth of those would be enough.
