Hawaii will be playing Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee in an effort to avenge last year’s 63-10 home setback to the Commodores. Is there going to be another blowout? Is the game likely to be closer in 2023?
Once again, the FBS season will open off with the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors facing off against the Vanderbilt Commodores. The Commodores will be playing the Rainbow Warriors at home this time around, and they’ll be hoping to repeat their 63-10 victory from a year ago.
Mike Wright, Vanderbilt’s starting quarterback, has been replaced by AJ Swann, a sophomore who has gone 3-for-7 in relief appearances. Brayden Schager, the junior quarterback of Hawaii, is poised to confront the defensive unit of the Commodores, which concluded the 2022 season ranked 125th among the 131 FBS teams. Despite the favorable matchup, Schager had a lackluster performance in this game during Week 0 of the 2016 season.
We shouldn’t get our hopes up too high for this encounter, as neither of these teams won more than five games in 2022. In-season competition is where Vanderbilt really shines, as the SEC is a much stronger conference than the Mountain West. Starting with a 63-10 loss against Vanderbilt at home in 2022, Hawaii went on to lose its next three games.
Against teams with weak defenses like Nevada, UNLV, and Utah State, the Rainbow Warriors were able to put up big offensive numbers after getting their first win of the season last year against Duquesne.
Last year, after a promising 3-1 start, the Vanderbilt Commodores went on a five-game losing streak, including a 55-3 loss to Alabama. The Commodores, who will be led by Clark Lea for the third straight season, improved from 2-10 in 2021 to 5-7 in 2022 and will be looking to finish the regular season with a positive record for the first time in franchise history in 2023.
