Early Preview: Sugar Bowl: CFP Texas vs Washington Picks & Analysis 01-01-2024

Game Preview

With the selection of Michigan, Washington, Texas, and Alabama to the NCAA Football Playoff last Sunday, Florida State became the first conference champion from the Power Five to go undefeated to be left out of the four-team tournament. On January 1st, Michigan will take on Alabama at the Rose Bowl, and on January 2nd, Washington will face Texas at the Sugar Bowl. The victors of both games will meet in Houston on January 8th for the national title.

In the Sugar Bowl, the second-ranked Washington takes on third-ranked Texas, both teams attempting to capture a CFP championship for the first time. The Caesars Superdome in New Orleans will host the Sugar Bowl. In the semifinal matchup, the Longhorns appear to be the early favorites. Texas has had higher recruiting classes and possesses the more noteworthy victory on its record after defeating Alabama, even if Washington is still unbeaten.

This year’s edition is led by two of the sport’s most inventive offensive play-designers, in the form of head coaches Steve Sarkisian and Kalen DeBoer. This season, Texas and Washington are ranked 16th and 11th regarding scoring offense and 10th and 12th according to overall offense, respectively.

These two teams have a ton of talented players. Texas’ offense, which does not include running back Jonathan Brooks, is led by quarterback Quinn Ewers, a former first-round pick, and standout wide receivers Xavier Worthy alongside Adonia Mitchell. Additionally, Ja’Tavion Sanders, a tight end, has proven to be a formidable threat within the catching attack.

When it comes to Washington, the Huskies play with plenty of pace. Rome Odunze, Ja’Lynn Polk, Jalen McMillan, and Michael Penix Jr. are just a few of the weapons available to the likely Heisman Trophy winner. Running back Dillon Johnson has been serving as an offensive weapon lately, averaging a minimum of 80 rushing yards in his last six games, 152 versus Oregon during the Pac-12 title game and 256 versus USC.
