Early Preview: Cotton Bowl: Missouri vs Ohio St Preview & Analysis 12-05-2023

Game Preview

Game Preview

The Ohio State Buckeyes (11-1) and Missouri Tigers (10-2) will play in the Cotton Bowl in a Big Ten vs. SEC game at AT&T Stadium on December 29.

The Buckeyes had never dropped a game before they lost to Michigan, the top-seeded team in the final College Football Playoff rankings, 30-24 on November 25, during the regular-season finale. Ohio State is participating in its eleventh straight New Year’s Six bowl game; the tradition dates back to the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day, 2014, the season prior to the start of the four-team playoff. This season, wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. has hauled in 14 touchdowns and averages 100.9 receiving yards per game. He is a nominee for the Biletnikoff Award and is expected to go in the top five of the NFL Draft in 2024. Ohio State has the third-best total defense in the country, allowing only 259.9 yards per contest. With an impressive scoring defense that allows only 11 points per game, they rank No. 2 in the nation.

Last game out Missouri won 48-14 versus the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Tigers are enjoying their first 10-win campaign since 2014, the year they advanced to the Cotton Bowl and won the Citrus Bowl. Despite losing in the bowl the previous two years with 6-7 grades, this is their 1st winning season in the past 5 years. Missouri needed to make some adjustments after a 6-7 2022 season and a Gasparilla Bowl loss to Wake Forest. Head coach Eli Drinkwitz set the tone for the adjustments with his attitude and his duties. Drinkwitz gave up his play-calling skills and hired Kirby Moore, the previous offensive coordinator at Fresno State, as his offensive coordinator in January. Jim Knowles’ defense at OSU will provide probably the hardest test of the season for Missouri’s revitalized attack, which is presently 25th in the country in yards per game.
