This Sunday’s NFL matchup between the Atlanta Falcons and the Jacksonville Jaguars will take place at Wembley Stadium in London. The last game for the Falcons was against the Lions. Atlanta lost that game by a score of 2-0. The Jaguars’ Week 3 opponent was the Houston Texans. Jacksonville also lost that game by a large margin.
The season opened with a bang as the Falcons defeated the Panthers 24-10. In the game, Desmond Ridder threw for 115 yards and a touchdown for Atlanta, and Tyler Allgeier rushed for 75 yards and two touchdowns for the Falcons. The Falcons continued their winning ways in game two, this time defeating the Packers 25-24.
This time around, it was Bijan Robinson’s 19 carries for 124 yards that led the rush. Atlanta trailed 13-3 at halftime of game three against the Lions. The Falcons added only three more points after that and ultimately fell by a score of 20-6. For his part, Robinson added 33 rushing yards to Ridder’s 201 passing yards. With five receptions for 41 yards, Kyle Pitts led the team.
The 2023 season began with a win for the Jaguars, who defeated the Colts 31-21. In the season opener, Trevor Lawrence of Jacksonville threw for 241 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. The Jaguars dropped game two, 17-9, to the Chiefs.
Despite the loss, Christian Kirk had a productive day as receiver, accumulating 110 yards on 11 receptions. In their third game of the season, Jacksonville faced the Texans and recorded another lackluster effort. The Jaguars lost 37-17 after allowing points in each of the four quarters. While Travis Etienne rushed for 88 yards on 19 rushes, Lawrence threw for 279 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.
Two straight losses have accumulated for Jacksonville. At least losing to the Chiefs in Kansas City was understandable. Even so, Jacksonville should have beaten the Texans. With 404 total yards of offense (288 through the air) and 22 total first downs, Jacksonville struggled to convert on third down, going just 5-for-13, and turning the ball over twice.
It’s not crazy to believe Jacksonville can cover in front of the London crowd, but they will need to make a strong comeback. With only 183 yards of offense (44 rushing) and 16 first downs, Atlanta’s offense was completely unsuccessful against the Lions.
