On December 31 at FedExField, the Washington Commanders (4-11) take on the San Francisco 49ers (11-4).
What was supposed to be a potential Super Bowl clash turned into a blowout, as the Baltimore Ravens won handily 33-19 on the road thanks to subpar play from Brock Purdy. The 49ers, who are atop the NFC West, have an explosive offense that ranks second in the NFL with an average of 404.3 yards per game. With 265.7 passing yards per game, Brock Purdy’s aerial attack has been incredible, he has completed the season with an astounding 4050 passing yards. Christian McCaffrey, who has 1395 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, is the 49ers’ main offensive weapon on the ground. San Francisco’s defense, which is the team’s main asset, gives up just 112.3 yards and 17.8 points per game (3rd). With 10.5 sacks, Nick Bosa has proven to be a quarterback’s worst nightmare. Meanwhile, Charvarius Ward has intercepted 4 passes, demonstrating a defense that is equally opportunistic.
Washington came dangerously close to pulling off a victory, but the Commanders lost their sixth straight game to the New York Jets (30-28) after failing to hold onto their lead. And there are more inquiries about quarterbacks. Sam Howell was replaced by Jacoby Brissett, who orchestrated the comeback, giving Washington another opportunity to evaluate potential starters for the upcoming campaign. The defense has proven to be Washington’s true weak point. With 384.3 yards and 30.2 points allowed per game, the Commanders’ defensive record is the lowest in the league. In an otherwise unimpressive season, Jonathan Allen (5.5 sacks) and Kendall Fuller (two interceptions) have been the bright spots. To respond to the 49ers’ offensive monster and find a way to spark the offense against a strong San Francisco defense, the Commanders will have to dig deep.
