On Saturday, Burnley will visit Tottenham Hotspur at Turf Moor; the two teams are currently 15 spots apart in the young Premier League table. Spurs’ trophy drought will extend by at least a few more months after their loss to Fulham on Wednesday, while Vincent Kompany and company were able to forget their Premier League struggles by winning the EFL Cup.
A two-week delay between the visits of Manchester City and Aston Villa proved virtually immaterial for Kompany’s Burnley, who earned rapid promotion back to the Premier League after dominating the Championship last season.
Burnley’s top aim right now is to stop a six-game winless skid in the Premier League stretching all the way back to April 2022, and their next opponent is League Two giant killers Salford City, who sent Leeds United packing on penalties.
Once the international break is through, Burnley still has to face Manchester United and Newcastle United before the end of the month, and Tottenham will be coming to Turf Moor with something to prove.
On Tuesday night, Spurs played Fulham in the second round of the English Football League Cup. The match was a source of great entertainment for Spurs’ opponents, as Postecoglou’s heavily rotated squad went into halftime trailing by one goal due to an own goal by Micky van de Ven.
After that, penalties were on the horizon, and while the Cottagers were successful on all five of their attempts, Davinson Sanchez was denied by Marek Rodak, and Tottenham was eliminated from the cup for the latest time in a row, effectively ending their chances of a major title.
Spurs have won four of the last five meetings with Burnley, so most of their memories from those games are positive. However, their most recent trip to Turf Moor ended in a 1-0 loss, after which Antonio Conte famously questioned his ability to get a tune out of his side.
