Bournemouth and Tottenham Hotspur kick off Saturday’s Premier League action at the Vitality Stadium. The Cherries’ 2022–23 season ended on a sour note, despite ensuring their place in the Premier League. Gary O’Neil was fired after the team suffered four straight league defeats.
Andoni Iraola, his successor, has spent €127 million on new players during the summer in an attempt to build a more long-lasting team. Our season projections for Bournemouth could be overstated, though, given the Spaniard’s winless start after two Premier League games.
In his first game in charge, Iraiola led his team to a 1-1 draw against West Ham United. However, the next week, his team blew a 2-0 lead and lost 3-1 at Liverpool. It’s hardly surprising that Bournemouth hasn’t won a league game since April, when they thumped last season’s relegation candidates Leeds United 4-1 despite being underdogs in each of those contests.
Unfortunately for Iraola, Tottenham is coming to Dorset to play at the Vitality Stadium, as the visitors are riding high after a strong start to the domestic season. Spurs appear to have adjusted well to life without Harry Kane, proving they are still a formidable opponent even without the Englishman’s assistance.
New manager Ange Postecoglou tasted victory in the Premier League for the first time last week after starting the season with a 2-2 draw at Brentford. Spurs boosted their confidence with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United in London thanks to an unanswered second-half brace from the Australian in his first professional win in England.
With Rayo Vallecano, Iraola’s defensive approach paid huge dividends, but he’s finding it difficult to keep clean sheets in the Premier League. The Bournemouth defense has been awful this season, allowing at least one goal in ten of their eleven home league games. On the bright side, they’ve only given up multiple goals four times.
The Cherries have shown they are mindful of Tottenham’s attacking threat at home by keeping three clean sheets in their last five league matches at Vitality Stadium. Bournemouth can take heart from scoring several goals in both of last season’s matchups against Spurs, despite the fact that their defense has shown many faults over the years.
