This Saturday’s Premier League West London derby will feature Brentford and Fulham. Last Saturday, Thomas Frank’s team drew 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur, and the Cottagers beat Everton 1-0 thanks to some luck.
Fulham might have easily left Goodison Park without all three points on the opening weekend if not for the heroics of Bernd Leno in goal and a flurry of wasted opportunities from Sean Dyche’s Everton. Despite having many chances against Marco Silva’s defense, Everton ultimately lost thanks to a second-half goal from Bobby Decordova-Reid, who gave Fulham a victory that was debatably undeserved.
While the lingering uncertainty around the futures of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Willian does not help the Cottagers, former Everton manager Silva acknowledged that it was “not a good performance” from his players. However, Fulham did not help themselves at Craven Cottage toward the conclusion of the previous season, as they won only two of their final seven Premier League home matches in 2022-23 and have preserved only one top-flight clean sheet in front of their own fans since the end of October.
Given Thomas Frank and Ange Postecoglou’s well-documented dedication to attacking football, it was no surprise that the goals were flying in at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday, despite the fact that kickoff was delayed due to a water supply problem. In that London derby, Cristian Romero scored on a header, but Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo, who have stepped up without the services of the suspended Ivan Toney, helped Brentford surge ahead.
Emerson Royal then scored expertly into the bottom corner to earn a point for a Tottenham team missing Harry Kane, reenacting last year’s Boxing Day 2-2 draw on Brentford’s soil. Brentford’s two final road wins of the 2022-23 season, both against London clubs, came against Spurs and Chelsea, and the entertaining stalemate with Tottenham was far from a dismal result after a winless preseason
