After suffering a devastating loss over the weekend, Juventus will look to quickly get back on track when they visit Serie A powerhouse Lecce on Tuesday night in Turin. While Juve’s undefeated start was shattered in Sassuolo, their southern rivals have recently achieved their third win in five matches and have yet to be defeated.
After a promising start to the season that saw them win three of their first four league games, Juventus seemed poised to make a run at the Scudetto after several years of futility.
They could yet make a run at the championship in the coming months, but head coach Max Allegri will be concerned about the manner of their collapse, which culminated in dark humor when Federico Gatti scored a barely believable own goal in second-half stoppage time.
The Bianconeri twice came back from behind after Sassuolo’s first goal went through Wojciech Szczesny’s hands, but they messed up in the final minutes at Mapei Stadium, allowing the hosts to come away with a 4-2 victory and just their second Serie A victory of the season.
On the bright side, Federico Chiesa is still 100 percent and scored again over the weekend; the Italy striker will now face off against one of the league’s most formidable defensive units.
While Juve gave up four at Sassuolo in 90 minutes, Tuesday’s hosts have given up the same number of goals in five games, so it may not be easy to right the ship right away.
In fact, the Puglian team Lecce is currently ranked higher than Juventus in the top four of Serie A, and they have allowed only one goal all month long.
Despite suffering two losses against the Bianconeri last season, including a 2-1 setback in Turin as recently as May, new coach Roberto D’Aversa has led Lecce to an unprecedented 11 points through their first five league games.
The Giallorossi have played to draws against Monza and Fiorentina, and they have won matches against Lazio, Salernitana, and Genoa (the latter team succumbed to constant siege and lost 1-0 at Via del Mare on Friday).
