Predictions & Analysis: Padres vs Giants 09-25-2023

September 25, 2023

Game Preview

With nine victories in their previous ten games, the Padres have moved up to third place in the NL West. Although San Diego has not been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs just yet, they will likely be in the next game or two. Six of the Padres’ 10 victories versus the Giants this year have come by shutout.

The Padres have a.296 team batting average, 21 home runs, and 60 runs scored in those games. Juan Soto has led the club with 14 hits and has hit six home runs. When pitching against the Giants, Padres pitchers have a 3.54 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 9.6 K/9. They have had five good starts out of ten total.

There is a very good likelihood that Blake Snell will be named the National League’s Cy Young Award winner this year. In 174 innings of work, he has a 2.33 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 227 strikeouts. Snell’s two best starts of the year have come against the Giants. Snell has not allowed a run in 12 innings pitched against the Giants in either of his two starts. He has struck out 19 and allowed just six hits.

Since the Giants and the Padres both have identical records, they are in the same position. They have not been eliminated from playoff contention just yet, but they likely will be. The Giants’ poor play has resulted in eight losses in their last 10 contests. The Giants dropped three of four games to the Dodgers over the weekend.

The Giants have a.225 average, 14 home runs, and 41 runs scored against the Padres this season. Mike Yastrzemski has three home runs, making him the team leader. The Giants’ pitching staff has struggled against the Padres, posting a 6.07 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, and 8.4 K/9. In all of their games this season against the Padres, the Giants have been led by a subpar starting pitcher.

For the Giants, Logan Webb has been a workhorse. To my surprise, Webb has yet to make a start for the Padres this year. On the other hand, he has excelled at home this year. Webb has a 2.37 ERA and a.227 opponent batting average in 15 home starts.
