Going into the final week of the season, the division and Wild Card races are extremely close, both of which the Astros are involved in. In the division race, the Astros are 0.5 games ahead of the Mariners and 2.5 games behind the Texas Rangers. The series winner will almost certainly be awarded the last Wild Card place.
With this weekend’s sweep by the Kansas City Royals, Houston has now lost seven of its previous 10 games. It doesn’t get any easier for the Astros as they finish the season with three games against the Mariners and three games against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Verlander will start the first game of this series, and the Astros will be counting on him to pitch well. Verlander will need to be at his best because Houston has a difficult matchup at the plate. For the Astros, Verlander has been merely OK. He’s thrown 55 innings while striking out 50 batters and has a 1.22 WHIP and a 3.93 ERA.
Six of the last 10 games played by the Mariners have ended in defeat, and they were recently swept by the Texas Rangers. The Mariners are now the only team not in the Wild Card race and have some room to make up. As was previously said, they are just behind the Astros by 0.5 games, making this series extremely important.
Following these three games against the Astros, Seattle will play a four-game series against the Rangers to round up the regular season. Fortunately, seven of their next eight games will be played in Seattle, giving them a fighting chance to win the rest of their games and make the playoffs.
The Mariners’ rotation has been led by Luis Castillo. He has a.211 on-base average and a 3.06 ERA in 207 innings pitched. This season, Castillo has excelled at home. At T-Mobile Park, he had a 2.52 ERA, a considerably better K/9, and a.178 opponent batting average against him.
