After sweeping the Mariners over the weekend, the Rangers come into this series riding a five-game winning streak. For the Rangers, this past weekend was monumental. They came into the series tied for first place in the AL West with the Mariners, and after sweeping the series, they grabbed back the lead for good. The Rangers’ current record is 87-68. They are now the first team outside of the playoffs, with a three-game lead over the Mariners and a 2.5-game lead over the Astros.
The recent week has been a productive one for Texas’s offense. They have an.363 on-base percentage and are hitting.263. The Rangers have put up 42 runs on the board and have blasted 14 home runs. Their actual run total is 37.3, which means they are scoring more than projected.
Today, Jon Gray of the Rangers took the mound. Overall, he has a 4.22 ERA and is 8-8 on the season. Recently, his pitching has been less than stellar. He has only pitched 13.2 innings over four starts this month. He has allowed 14 runs in those games, 13 of which were earned. An 8.56 ERA is a rather bad mark. He has a problem hitting home homers recently. This month he has allowed five home runs, one in each of his starts.
Meanwhile, the Twins swept the weekend series from the Angels, who lost two of three. Recently, things have been difficult. Ten of their last twelve games have ended in defeat. The Angels’ season is gone and they will finish below.500 and out of the playoffs once again. This already injury-plagued Angels season just got worse with the news that Mike Trout will be sidelined for the year.
They’re going to start Patrick Sandoval on the mound. He has a losing record of 7-13 and an earned run average of 4.19. Not even this month has been kind to him. He has a 5.72 ERA this month after allowing 22 runs in 18.2 innings over four starts. However, only 12 of those runs were earned. With him on the mound, the Angels have dropped all four of their March games and eight of their previous nine.
