After losing his job as head coach at Sampdoria in January, Roberto D’Aversa was brought in to fill the void. He probably wishes the club could sign some new players before the transfer deadline. Last year, Lecce favored a creative style of play, which didn’t always pay off. They’ll be lucky to avoid defeat against Lazio at home in front of their own fans at the Stadio Via del mare.
It will be exciting to watch if Lazio can repeat their performance from last season, when they finished second in the league behind Napoli and ahead of both Milan teams. With Sergej Milinkovic-Savic out of the lineup for the first time in eight years, a repeat performance will be challenging.
However, Daichi Kamada from Eintracht Frankfurt and Gustav Isaksen from Midtjylland in Denmark are two intriguing additions to the offense for Lazio, complementing the ever-reliable Ciro Immobile. Lazio should have no trouble bringing home three points from their opening day journey to the south, but it might not be the rout Sarri was hoping for.
Roberto D’Aversa will have his hands full this season trying to keep Lecce safe, but you can still count on them to try to play football whenever possible. Few players have been brought in, and if they are to pull off the unlikely upset, it will be on the shoulders of Gabriel Strefezza.
Maurizio Sarri may hold off on playing any of his new attacking players this weekend, banking instead on veterans like Felipe Anderson and Ciro Immobile to get the job done. This may alter, though, closer to the game’s conclusion if Lazio needs an insurance goal to win.
