The Italian powerhouse Juventus hopes to rebound from last season’s disappointing seventh-place domestic result. On the first weekend of the season, they’ll be taking on a strong Udinese team.
Juve will be relieved to see the back of the 2022–23 season. After starting the season in fifth, the Old Lady saw its standing drop to seventh by the end of the year. Meanwhile, they won’t be competing in Europe this season after being kicked out for failing to follow FFP regulations.
But despite all of that, Juventus is still one of the favorites to win Serie A this season. The only significant addition to Massimiliano Allegri’s squad this season is Timothy Weah, who came over from Lille. With 59 first-game victories, Juventus is the Serie A club with the most victories all-time. That includes winning six of their previous seven games on matchday one in Italy’s premier division.
Udinese’s last season was satisfactory; they placed 12th in the league. They were only able to score 47 goals in 38 games, highlighting their deficiencies in the final third. That’s where they’ll need to make the most progress if they want to make it to the top of the standings this season.
In the last three years, the Italian team has struggled to start the season off on the right foot, losing their first two games each time. Their ability to rally from behind was significant last season, as only Bologna recovered from a deficit to win more points in the Italian league.
In their last 15 meetings, The Old Lady has only lost once. On the opening day of the 2021-22 season, these two clubs played to a 2-2 tie in what would be Cristiano Ronaldo’s last game for Juventus. After a disappointing season last year, Juventus will need to prove they are back on track this weekend.
