Inter Milan play Monza at San Siro on Saturday after being idle for two months due to their loss in the Champions League final. Having won two trophies and coming near to European success in 2022–23, Inter will be looking to improve in the upcoming Serie A season.
Inter lost 12 games in Serie A last season, although they were quite successful in knockout events, retaining the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana and came very close to winning the Champions League for the first time since 2010. Simone Inzaghi’s squad won the Supercoppa and advanced to the Champions League finals by defeating Milan, but their season was cut short by a crushing loss to Manchester City in Istanbul.
Despite a successful preseason that included wins over PSG and RB Leipzig, Inter have yet to defeat Monza in their first home league match since the Biancorossi’s debut in the Italian top flight. Inter have won their opening league fixture in each of the last four years. Only Monza and Juventus were able to keep the Nerazzurri winless in both league games that season (2022-2023), with the former earning a 2-2 draw at the Brianteo and the latter claiming a legendary 1-0 triumph in Milan.
After a slow start in their first season in Serie A, rookie coach Raffaele Palladino guided an ambitious Monza club to the 11th spot in the final rankings. The Biancorossi, who had spent decades in Italy’s lesser leagues, finally broke through and finished only 20 points behind third-placed Inter; no promoted team in Europe’s top five leagues last season scooped up more points (52, tied with Fulham).
Palladino’s team has started the new season less impressively than they did in preseason, despite winning most of their friendlies against weak opponents this summer. They were eliminated from the Coppa Italia last week after a second-half collapse at home against Serie B side Reggiana, so this Saturday they will be clear underdogs.
